The California Pools & Landscape Growth Story
“Verum Digital Marketing has been my company’s trusted marketing partner for more than a decade. We were scattered and ineffective previously and with Verum’s help have become more focused and effective with a very different ROI and expectation for branding and marketing. We continue to update our web sites, adapt our marketing approach, and I feel we are at the leading edge of changes in platform changes rather than chasing the constant changes. California Pools and Landscape, which I founded in 1988, went to new levels of revenue and profitability in no small part due to our work with Verum. I’m now sitting on a beach in Hawaii as a result of this and the eventual purchase of the company. I couldn’t be happier.”
Michael Smith, Founder
From Trusted Local Builder to Acquisition-Ready Brand
When our partnership with California Pools & Landscape began, they were already a respected name in Arizona. They had decades of experience, a strong reputation, and a portfolio of outdoor living projects that gave customers plenty of reasons to trust them.
They did not come to us asking for a total transformation.
Like a lot of established companies, they had pieces that were working and pieces that were not. The brand had equity, but it needed more consistency. The website existed, but it was not doing enough. Marketing was happening, but it was scattered. The company had built real trust in the field, but that trust was not showing up clearly enough online, in campaigns, or across the larger customer experience.
At the beginning, the work was focused on improving what was in front of us. Over time, as trust grew and the strategy became clearer, the relationship turned into something much bigger.
Earning the Right to Lead the Strategy
The first couple of years were about listening, learning the business, and proving that better marketing could create better outcomes.
We helped clean up the brand, improve the website, sharpen campaign strategy, and make the company easier to understand and choose. As the work started to connect, the opportunity became more obvious. California Pools did not just need better marketing materials. They needed a stronger brand system around an already strong business.
That shift did not happen overnight. It happened through trust, performance, and a shared willingness to keep improving.
As our role grew, we helped guide a broader reinvention of how California Pools showed up in the market. The brand became more polished, more consistent, and more recognizable. The website became stronger. Campaigns became more focused. The customer journey became easier to follow. The company started to look the way it operated: established, professional, trusted, and built for growth.
Building a Brand Customers Could Believe In
For homeowners, a pool is not a small decision. It is a major investment, and the company they choose needs to feel credible before the first conversation ever happens.
That became a big part of the work.
We rebuilt the website to better showcase their projects, improve the mobile experience, support search visibility, and create a clearer path from research to inquiry. We refined the brand so it could work across every major touchpoint, including trucks, signage, print, sales materials, ads, social media, email, and the website.
The goal was to make California Pools feel as strong in the market as their work already was in the backyard.
Connecting the Whole Marketing Ecosystem
As our partnership expanded, Verum supported the company across paid search, programmatic advertising, social media, email, text campaigns, content, campaign creative, video, analytics, and call tracking.
We also helped extend the brand into the physical world through vehicle wraps, storefront signage, monument signage, print ads, display booths, and other sales materials.
Each piece mattered because each piece was part of how people experienced the company. A homeowner might see a truck in their neighborhood, search the company later, read reviews, visit the website, see an ad, get an email, or walk into a showroom. Our job was to make those moments feel connected.
The more consistent the brand became, the more powerful it became.
Built for Customers, Strong Enough for the Next Chapter
Over more than a decade, California Pools grew into one of Arizona’s most recognizable pool and backyard brands.
During our partnership, the company broke revenue records year after year, expanded from one location to four, strengthened its online and offline presence, and earned recognition for social media, online presence, and website performance.
That brand evolution did more than make California Pools more marketable to customers. It helped make the company more valuable and more attractive as a business. Eventually, California Pools entered its next chapter through acquisition by Cody Pools, a national pool company.
For us, that is the real story. We did not walk in with a reinvention plan on day one. We earned trust, found the bigger opportunity, and helped reshape a strong local company into a brand built for growth, recognition, and acquisition.

“Thank you Verum for helping to make California Pools & Landscape a digital powerhouse not only in our local AZ market but nationally as well.”
